Madra Salach bring the new wave of Irish folk music to Nalen

With roots in Dublin’s indie scene and a shared love of traditional Irish folk music, six-piece band Madra Salach combine original songs with carefully crafted interpretations of folk classics. On 4 February, they come to Nalen in Stockholm.

Madra Salach (“Dirty Dog” in Gaelic) are a six-piece band from Dublin playing modern Irish folk music. The members originally met while playing in different bands on the city’s indie scene. Their shared love of the traditional Irish repertoire brought Paul Banks, Adam Cullen and Dara Duffy together, and they soon began playing impromptu sessions in pubs across north Dublin.

A chance encounter between Paul Banks and Jack Martin of Dublin City Soul veterans Fizzy Orange marked the beginning of a new chapter for the band. The two began writing original songs for the group, and Martin brought in his Fizzy Orange bandmate, Maxime Arnold, who also joined.

The songs explore surprisingly contemporary themes, yet are written in a style that could just as easily have emerged at any point over the past century. They sit alongside a carefully curated selection of classics from the Irish folk tradition. On 4 February, Madra Salach bring the heritage of Dublin’s pubs to Klubben at Nalen in Stockholm, with a repertoire where centuries-old folk traditions meet stories from our own time.
