With her acclaimed debut album Vad gör jag nu? (What Do I Do Now?) freshly released, Fanny Avonne is heading out on her first headline tour this spring. On 26 February, she arrives at Stora Salen at Nalen.

Every now and then, an artist comes along whose radiance is impossible to ignore. Fanny Avonne is one of them. But things could have turned out very differently. At 17, the Stockholm-born artist dropped out of high school, signed a record deal and moved to Los Angeles, only to discover how a dream can be corrupted when it falls into someone else’s hands. Three years later, she returned to Sweden with her self-confidence at rock bottom and started over.

On her debut album Vad gör jag nu?, Fanny Avonne wrote the songs herself, co-produced the record and played much of the instrumentation. Once you know what it feels like to lose creative control, you’re not likely to give it up again. And when Fanny Avonne calls the shots, there are no easy formulas: jazz, bossa nova, Swedish singer-songwriter traditions, soul and pop flow into one another, carried by rich melodies and poetic, everyday lyrics that navigate love and chaos with rare directness.

For many, their first encounter with Fanny Avonne came through Tjuvjakts hugely popular hit Tusen spänn, where her unmistakable chorus became the song’s emotional centre. This was followed by the acclaimed EP Växtvärk, a Grammis Award for Best New Artist, and now, finally, her debut album Vad gör jag nu?.

The album’s twelve tracks explore the strange emptiness that can emerge when a difficult period is finally over: what happens when the chaos you’ve almost come to identify with suddenly falls silent? The result is an album that is as personal as it is musically rich, earning praise for Fanny Avonne’s distinctive songwriting, arrangements and genre-defying musicianship. Her older sister Felicia also features throughout, her uncompromising advice having become a kind of compass for Fanny. Fanny herself has said she hopes to become that same kind of big sister to those who listen.

In February and March, she’ll take Vad gör jag nu? on the road for her first tour with the debut album, with four dates in Sweden and one in Norway.
