Heartfelt Canadian country rock – Horsebath at Nalen, 9 October

Horsebath from Montreal are one of the most exciting new voices in Canadian country rock – a genre that perhaps should not be called American at all. On their acclaimed debut albumAnother Farewell the quartet blend cosmic country à la Gram Parsons with Tex-Mex influences, folk rock, and wistful Americana.

The four multi-instrumentalists – Keast Mutter, Dagen Mutter, Daniel Connolly och Etienne Beausoleil – came together through a series of happy coincidences, from an unexpected rideshare meeting in a parking lot to inviting a bassist they met at a softball game. With roots in different parts of Canada and a shared love for music by The Band, Neil Young and Lee Hazlewood, , they create songs that balance wanderlust and homesickness, joy and melancholy.

Another Farewell, , recorded over ten intense days in Montreal, captures the band’s free and experimental approach, swapping instruments and roles to coax out new ideas. The album ranges from the Tex-Mex drive of Hard to Love o the anthemic title track and the tender, floating Don’t Know What It Is.

Having built a reputation with rip-roaring live shows at festivals like the Mariposa Folk Festival and the Halifax Urban Folk Festival, Horsebath now return to Europe – making their Swedish debut at Nalen on 9 October.
